The LADY IN EXQUISITE FRENCH REGENCY EMPIRE GOWN OF SHEER FABRIC IS TRULY WHERE THE ARTIST CONCENTRATED HIS/HER EFFORTS. The face is beautifully painted as well, but you can tell the artist's subject was the dress. Unique among portraits, this one is not signed - another reason we believe it was never finished. EXCELLENT CONDITION, with no chips or cracks in the fine, thin ivory wafer - but we think she was never finished. The overall effect is truly etherial and much more interesting than if this 'unfinished' & rather homely lady's portrait had been completed. Great interest in juxtaposition of very intricately & delicately handled sheer Empire gown against the open & undetailed background spaces. I find this one most appealing!
