Magnificent English Georgian Silk Embroidery of Two Romantic Couples, Castle, Trees, C1810. Extraordinary early 19th Century silk embroidered scene of romantic couple in the foreground in exquisitely detailed period dress, hats and shoes. Their delicately detailed faces are hand painted. Holding her hand under a large, old tree with a castle in the background and another couple walking in the distance. Their faces were actually embroidered, a very difficult process. This extremely fine and intricately wrought work of art features hills in the distance and glimpses of blue clouds between the branches. Early 19th century embroideries were worked in a few basic stitches, especially satin stitch, long and short stitch and split satin stitch. How the threads were laid in determines how they reflect the light and how the color is perceived. Metallic threads were used as well. This beauty is framed with an oval mat in a black and gold frame. The embroidered scene measures 9 1/4" wide by 11 1/4" long. The frame itself is 14 1/2" wide by 16 1/2" long. This heirloom silk embroidery is in Excellent condition with some very, very minor foxing, unavoidable in something of this age and material. The silk stitching is in excellent condition with colors still very vibrant. We live in a smoke-free environment and guarantee this textile to be odor free.
