Paul Lauritz was born in Larvik, Norway and later became a well known painter of desert landscapes, coastal paintings in California. He began painting at a very young age in Norway and later went to Vancouver, Canada then Oregon, United States where he worked as a commercial artist. Also, he started to paint landscapes and portraits. In Portland, Oregon he married Mary Potterton. Together they moved to Alaska to find gold during the gold rush. After losing money there he and Mary moved on to Los Angeles, California shortly after World War 1. There he discovered his love for the deserts of the South West and California and became very well noted for the wonderful landscape paintings he created while traveling around these regions. He traveled around the deserts and coasts of California and the Sierras, and to Mexico and Norway. The King of Norway commissioned him to do a painting for the Royal Palace. He began as a plein air painter and later took to painting in his studio as well. He used large pre-war french bristle brushes for some applications and even his hands for certain effects. After a long and fruitful life, he died in Glendale, California in 1975. Reference: "Artists in California, 1786-1940" Edan Hughes. "Who Was Who In American Art 1564-1975" Falk.
