The Duke of Sutherland was a title bestowed by William IV in 1833 on George Granville Leveson-Gower, 2nd Marquess of Stafford. The Gower family were one of the richest handful of landowning families in the United Kingdom. The family seat was originally Lilleshall Hall, one among a collection of grand and palatial homes.
The set is in good age appropriate condition with some staining, crazing, and loss of gilt, a beautiful display set with a rich and significant history. The set consist of:
7 dessert plates, size 9” D
2 lozenge shaped bowls, size 11 ½” L x 9” H
2 shell shaped bowls with branch form handles, 9 ½” L x 9 ½” H
1 footed Sucrier with underplate and cover, size of Sucrier 5” H x 7 ½ D, size of underplate 7” D
1 comporte, size 6” H x 12” D
