Beautifully worked pressed floral topiary in Victorian period carved gilt oval frame. Superb example of late nineteenth century folk art, yet so sophisticated. A bouquet of dried pressed flowers, pansies, ferns, and daisies are worked into a topiary, with a large leaf forming the topiary base and leaves forming the stem. More leaves, flowers, and ferns spill out at the base of the stem, a truly outstanding piece of folk art. Framed under glass against a stunning black backround, the picture provides a striking focal point in any room. The carved, oval wooden frame features flower festoons at the top, bottom, and both sides, with a detailed, beaded gadrooned border. The frame is heavily gilded and in excellent condition, as is the picture itself. The flowers show no losses, a definitive work that demands to be admired. The frame is also Victorian, circa 1890. The picture frame was recently re-backed, and may have been archivally framed also, to preserve the work for another 100 years. The oval frame measures 23" tall and 16 3/4" wide, a large, gorgeous example.
